Singapore currency is called Singapore dollar, it's usually abbreviated with the dollar sign $ (or alternatively S$), so do not confuse it with the US dollar. Not to create any confusion S$ will be used further.

Actually, it seems that StarHub offers at least 5 types of prepaid SIM cards:

There is a service called MaxMobile Value Prepaid, it offers data usage for StarHub GREEN Prepaid customers. Customers using GREEN Prepaid SIM cards (except MaxMobile Prepaid SIM Card) can activate MaxMobile Value Prepaid and buy any data package to start surfing the internet. Note that MaxMobile Value Prepaid cannot be activated on MaxMobile Prepaid SIM Card.

[edit] Where to buy

The prepaid cards can be bought from any StarHub shop (all over the country) or from many convenience stores. They require a passport for registration of all prepaid SIM cards in Singapore. Registration is performed at the store where you purchase SIM card. You can buy prepaid starter kits from StarHub shops, as well as gas stations and many convenience stores (such as 7-Eleven).

The prepaid SIM card is valid for 6 months since the moment of the last top-up.

MaxMobile Value Prepaid - to activate MaxMobile Value Prepaid package simply dial *131# and press Send on your mobile phone and then follow the instructions on-screen to activate a package you like.


BlackBerry - to activate any of the BlackBerry data plans follow the steps:

1. Ensure you have sufficient credit in your main balance.

2. Dial *122# and press Call.

3. Press 1 and follow the instructions to activate.


MaxMobile Prepaid - to activate your MaxMobile Prepaid Internet SIM:

  • if you're using S$ 18 / US$ 14.74 MaxMobile Prepaid Internet SIM for the first time just insert your Internet SIM into your device and you are ready to surf.
  • if you're using S$ 32 / US$ 26.20 MaxMobile Prepaid Internet SIM for the first time then follow the steps:

1. Insert the SIM card into your device.

2. Launch browser and get directed to Self-help portal.

3. Activate any data plan you want (the price of a data plan will be deducted from the main balance of your Internet SIM card).

4. Upon successfully activation you are ready to surf.

You can choose to top-up your Prepaid Card with any of the following options:

1. Happy Prepaid Top-up cards - Happy $8 (S$ 8/ US$ 6.55), Happy $18(S$ 18/ US$ 14.73) or Happy $38(S$ 38/ US$ 31.10) top-up cards for Prepaid mobile service. Plus there is a Happy $128 prepaid top-up card which costs S$ 28 / US$ 22.92 and offers:

  • S$ 100 / US$ 81.85 worth of local balance for local calls and SMS;
  • S$ 28 / US$ 22.92 worth of international Balance for IDD 008/018 (inclusive of local airtime charges of an IDD call) and global SMS.

Once any of the Happy $128 balance has been used up, the relevant charges will be deducted from the card's main balance. The Happy $128 bonus balance expires in 50 days from the day of the top-up. To roll over any unused Happy $128 bonus balance you will have to do another Happy $128 top-up.

Happy $128 top-up card is available at AXS / iNets / SAM / DBS/POSB ATMs / OCBC ATMs and Internet top-up using credit cards.


2. Online top-up (You need to have an Internet banking account with DBS/POSB, UOB or Citibank. Otherwise, contact your bank to sign up):

  • Includes eNets, VCard, debit cards or credit cards, Happy Stars and Happy$128 are available online via credit card payment.

Instructions for top-up:

1. Top-up Cards

  • Scratch off the foil on the back side of the GREEN Prepaid Top-up Card to reveal the top-up card number and PIN.
  • Call 9850 0000.
  • After the welcome message, press 2 to top up.
  • Enter the 10-digit top-up card number from your top-up card, followed by the 6-digit PIN.
  • Once top-up is successfully performed, you will receive an SMS notification.


2. Top-up Cards via USSD

  • Scratch off the foil on the back side of the GREEN Prepaid Top-up Card to reveal the top-up card number and PIN.
  • Dial *112*<10-digit Top-up Card number>*<6-digit PIN number># and the press SEND.
  • Once top-up is successfully performed, you will receive an SMS notification.


3. Top-up via DBS/POSB ATMs

  • Locate the nearest DBS/POSB ATM.
  • Insert your ATM card.
  • Select language and enter your PIN.
  • Select CASHCARD & MORE SERVICES -> LOAN APPLN & MORE SERVICES -> PURCHASE/TOP-UP CARD -> STARHUB -> TOP-UP GREEN Prepaid SIM.
  • Select account to debit top-up amount.
  • Enter your GREEN Prepaid mobile number and press ENTER.
  • Verify that the screen display details are accurate and confirm the transaction.


4. Top-up via OCBC ATMs

  • Locate the nearest OCBC ATM
  • Insert your ATM card -> Select your language and enter your PIN
  • Select MORE SERVICES -> MORE SERVICES -> SingTel/StarHub Services -> StarHub services -> Top-up StarHub Prepaid Card
  • Enter the correct Prepaid Mobile number and press YES
  • Select top-up amount.
  • Ensure that the Prepaid mobile number, top-up amount and account are correct and confirm the transaction.
  • Select NO if you do not want to perform another transaction or YES if you want to perform another transaction.

5. Top-up via SingPost SAMs

  • Locate the nearest SAM.
  • Select TELECOMMUNICATION SVCS from MAIN MENU.
  • Select TOP-UP your GREEN Prepaid card option.
  • Enter your GREEN Prepaid mobile number and touch OK to continue.

6. Top-up via AXS Stations

  • Select Top-up -> GREEN Prepaid Top-up.
  • Select your payment mode of NETS or Cashcard.
  • Follow touch-screen instructions to complete top-up transaction.

SingTel offers a 3G prepaid SIM card called hi!Card. It costs S$ 15 / US$ 12.29 and includes S$ 18 / US$ 14.75 credit. With every top-up of S$ 10 / US$ 8.19 or more you get free 5 MB. The prepaid data service comes in 2 packs (to activate any of the pack call *363):

  • Value Surfer Pack - you get 10 MB for S$ 1 / US$ 0.82 which are valid for 7 days.
  • Super Surfer Pack - you get 1 GB for S$ 7 / US$ 5.74 valid for 7 days.

Or you can surf using the pay-per-use rate of 0.054 S$ (US$ 0.044)/10 KB (2 GB) or S$ 0.027 (US$ 0.022)/10 KB (3 GB).

To surf on your laptop using a SingTel hi!Card follow the steps:

1. Insert the SingTel hi!Card SIM into your USB modem

2. Click on the USB Modem Application icon and create a new Access Point Name (APN)

  • Go to Menu -> Tools -> Options -> Profile Management
  • Create a New Profile. Click New and set Profile Name as hicard
  • At APN, click Static and set APN as hicard
  • Save and exit

3. Go to Text on the menu bar, key 3 and SMS to 727050

4. Follow the reply prompts on your laptop to activate any Unlimited Data Pack or Super Surfer Pack; a confirmation message will be sent to you if your subscription is successful. For a subsequent subscription, do Step 1 and then send SMS with 3 to 727050.

SingTel offers a prepaid BroadBand on Mobile SIM card for Laptop and iPad users. It gives you unlimited broadband usage for 3 consecutive.

  • A 3-day pass is S$ 18 / US$ 14.75 if you have a USB modem or HSPA-enabled netbook.
  • a 3-day pass for just S$ 12.60 / US$ 10.32 for iPad users.

3. Via M1 Postpaid line - you can choose to automate your top-ups on a monthly basis, denominations ranging from S$ 5 / US$ 4.11 to S$ 30 / US$ 24.67. The top-up transaction will be charged the postpaid postpaid user bill. To top up:

  • via SMS:
    • send SMS topup to 8888 using any M1 postpaid line;
    • you will receive an SMS requesting your NRIC/Passport number and the M Card number you wish to top-up;
    • reply to the SMS with <NRIC/Passport No.>,<M Card number to top-up>;
    • you will receive an SMS with details of your top-up request;
    • reply to the SMS with Y to proceed with the top-up if all details are correct;
    • you will receive a confirmation SMS once the top-up has been completed. The M Card number that you have topped up will also receive a confirmation SMS.
  • via WAP:
    • connect to Mi World Mobile using your WAP/GPRS mobile phone;
    • go to Lifestyle and select M Card Top-up;
    • select Proceed to continue;
    • fill in your NRIC/ID number and the M Card number that you'd like to top-up;
    • details of your request will be shown. Check the details and select Proceed if all the details are correct. A confirmation message will be displayed on your phone. A confirmation SMS will also be sent to both your mobile phone and the M Card number that have been topped up.


Top-up value options for M1 Prepaid Broadband (you can only top up to a maximum of 180 days within the validity period):

  • Day Plan:

There are Wi-Fi networks in the airport, McDonald's, library islandwide and certain shopping centres, but you need to register using a local mobile number and passport, for the locals your identity cards, SSID is wireless@SG, once registered you can login, it is free for 1Mdps, for 1Mdps and beyond you can pay a subscription fee.
